WANTED: Your Transformative Tales

December 1st, 2008 by Kat French | Print WANTED: Your Transformative Tales

I hinted about this a while back, but now I’m making it official.  I’d like to start collecting YOUR stories (and sharing them here in the “Bard’s Tales” category, along with my own personal anecdotes).  I’m interested in any kind of personal story, but I’m particularly looking for stories about events, ideas, and occurrences that:

  • Connected you to your ideals, beliefs or values in a more visceral, tangible way
  • Caused you to rethink or just revisit a previously-unquestioned belief
  • Prompted a positive change in a longstanding pattern of behavior
  • Resulted in a change in your goals and/or life’s direction
In short, I’m looking for the bend in the road.  Frost’s “two roads diverged in a yellow wood” moment.  The event doesn’t have to be a huge one, and the result doesn’t have to be huge.
I’m looking for stories that are significant, even if you think it’s just significant to you.
I can credit the story with a link back to your blog.  If you want to be anonymous, I will make up a lovely pseudonym for you.   Or you can make up your own pseudonym, if you like.  I won’t publish every story I get, but I’m putting the invitation out there.  You can reach me at internetbard [at] gmail dot com.
I believe stories matter.  Stories are how we reinforce the lessons we’ve learned, and pass them on to others.  Stories are transformative.  They make what’s important, personal.  They make what’s personal, important.  Story is the compiler that translates experiences into meaning (and back again into a changed experience).
I’m going to continue to tell my own personal tales, here, as well.  But I wanted to add some new voices to the mix, some fresh stories that come from different people, moving through their own different experiences.
